St Joseph’s Hospice names Rachel Black as new CEO

St Joseph’s Hospice has appointed Rachel Black as its new chief executive, following the retirement of Tony McLean after nearly six years in the role.
Black, who previously served as CEO of The Orpheus Centre, a performing arts charity supporting young disabled adults, brings extensive experience in care and leadership. She has also held senior positions at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice and Demelza Hospice Care for Children, where she served as a nurse consultant, head of clinical education, and lecturer-practitioner.
With a background in education, Black has been a lecturer and examiner at various universities since 1995, including five years as a lecturer at the University of Leeds.
“St Joseph’s has a remarkable history of delivering compassionate, personalised palliative and end-of-life care,” Black said. “I am thrilled to join the team and look forward to meeting the patients, families, and communities who make it special.”
Until Black officially assumes her role later this year, Jane Naismith, deputy chief executive and director of clinical services, will serve as interim chief executive. Naismith will return to her previous roles once the transition is complete.
Paddy McGuinness, chair of St Joseph’s Hospice, praised both Black and McLean: “Rachel brings a unique combination of leadership and deep palliative care experience, along with contributions to research and education. While we warmly welcome Rachel, we also extend our heartfelt thanks to Tony for his exceptional leadership, especially through the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic and recent economic difficulties."
