Classes to Resume at Dhaka University from September 22

After a break of over two and a half months, Dhaka University is set to resume classes from September 22. The decision was made at an emergency meeting of the university's syndicate this evening. The meeting was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, and later, the university authorities shared the information through a press release.

According to the press release, classes for all years, except for the first-year students, will commence on September 22. The undergraduate program for first-year students of the 2023-24 academic session is scheduled to begin on September 30.

The statement further mentioned that various proposals aimed at improving interpersonal relationships between teachers and students and resolving ongoing conflicts at the departmental, institutional, faculty, and central levels are currently in the process of implementation.

The university's academic activities had been nearly suspended since July 1, due to the movement demanding quota reform in government jobs and a strike called by teachers over a universal pension scheme. Although the university was officially closed from July 17, the situation became more complicated after the student-led mass uprising, which resulted in the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5.

Following the government's downfall, an interim government was formed on August 8. During this period, the previous Vice-Chancellor resigned, and a new Vice-Chancellor, along with two Pro-Vice-Chancellors, were appointed. With these administrative changes stabilizing the situation, the decision to reopen the university and resume classes has now been made.
