Classes Resume at Dhaka University After Over Three Months

Dhaka University resumed its academic activities today after being closed for more than three months.

Classes and exams began around 10:00 am, with students returning from both dormitories and off-campus locations to participate.

By early morning, students gathered in various academic buildings, eager to attend their classes. Many were seen forming small groups with friends after class, revitalising the campus, which had been quiet for so long.

Iconic spots like the University Arts Building, the Social Science Faculty premises, Madhur Canteen, TSC, and other areas were once again filled with students, marking a return to vibrant campus life.

Students expressed excitement and relief at being able to return. Ashikur Rahman Tanmoy, a Health Economics student, shared, "We’ve been waiting for this day. Waking up and going to class now feels different."

Sharif Uddin, a History student, reflected on the recent challenges: "Our primary focus as students is our studies, but we couldn’t attend classes for a long time. We were part of the movement for state reform. Now, being back on campus feels liberating, especially as the halls are no longer under the control of the ruling student body."

The vacation at Dhaka University began on June 2 before Eid-ul-Azha. Classes were initially scheduled to resume on July 1, but public universities remained inactive after teachers began a work abstention on July 1, demanding the reinstatement of the previous pension scheme instead of the Prottoy scheme.

The situation worsened when the then Awami League government closed all educational institutions on July 16 following violent protests linked to the movement for reforms in the public sector job quota system.
