Nepal Envoy Anticipates Energy Trade with Bangladesh Soon

Nepal’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Ghanshyam Bhandari, paid a courtesy visit to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus today at the State Guest House Jamuna.
During the meeting, Ambassador Bhandari congratulated the chief adviser on assuming leadership of the interim government following the historic student-led uprising in July-August.
Highlighting the strong ties between the two South Asian nations, both members of SAARC and BIMSTEC, the ambassador emphasised the "excellent" bilateral relations rooted in a shared history and strong people-to-people connections. However, he noted that the current level of economic engagement between the two countries remains modest.
Ambassador Bhandari discussed Nepal's vast hydropower potential and expressed optimism that energy trading between the two nations would commence in the near future. He also expressed gratitude for Bangladesh’s generous offer of access to the Chattogram and Mongla ports for Nepal’s use.
In addition, the ambassador thanked the Bangladesh government for hosting a significant number of Nepali students, particularly in the field of medical education. "Many of Nepal's doctors received their education in Bangladesh," he said.
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus enquired about the activities of SAARC, which has not held a summit since 2014. The SAARC headquarters is located in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu.
Ambassador Bhandari underlined the importance of bolstering regional cooperation through both SAARC and BIMSTEC, and encouraged close collaboration at multilateral forums.
