Dr Yunus Calls for Pakistan’s Support in Reviving SAARC

Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, on Wednesday urged for the revival of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) as a key platform for regional cooperation in South Asia.
This appeal was made during a meeting with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session at the UN headquarters in New York.
During their discussion, both leaders highlighted the importance of revitalising bilateral cooperation between their nations.
Prof Yunus expressed that reviving SAARC could serve as an effective starting point and sought Pakistan’s backing for this initiative.
In response, Shehbaz Sharif assured his support for the proposal and suggested a gradual approach for both countries in rejuvenating the regional platform.
Sharif emphasised the need for Bangladesh and Pakistan to turn a “new page” in their relations to foster cooperation across various sectors.
“It’s crucial to revive our relations,” he stated.
The Prime Minister also indicated Pakistan’s interest in investing in Bangladesh’s textile and leather industries.
Prof Yunus proposed establishing youth exchange programmes between the two countries.
Additionally, they discussed renewing foreign secretary-level talks and reactivating the joint commission between Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Foreign Advisor Touhid Hossain was also present during the meeting.
