India Isolates ’Suspected Mpox Case’

On Sunday, India reported that it had isolated a "suspected mpox case," with the health ministry assuring the public that the country has "robust measures" in place to handle such situations.

There have been no confirmed cases of mpox in India, which has a population of 1.4 billion.

The health ministry's statement revealed that the patient is a young male who recently travelled from a country where mpox is currently being transmitted.

"The patient has been isolated in a designated hospital and is currently stable," the statement said, adding that samples are being tested to confirm the presence of mpox.

Further details on the source of the potential infection were not provided.

The statement emphasised that there is "no cause for undue concern," and reassured that "the country is fully prepared to deal with such an isolated travel-related case and has robust measures in place to manage and mitigate any potential risk."

The resurgence of mpox and the discovery of a new strain, Clade 1b, in the Democratic Republic of Congo led the World Health Organization to issue its highest international alert level on August 14.

Mpox has also been detected in various parts of Asia and Europe.
