Bangladesh Needs Electoral and Democratic System Reform

Mujahidul Islam Selim is a former president of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and the first vice president (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) in post-independence Bangladesh. He served as the commander of the joint guerrilla forces of the National Awami Party (NAP), Communist Party, and Student Union during the Liberation War. He is the author of several books, including “Various Aspects of Politics,” “Marxism: An Eternal Philosophy,” and “There Is No Alternative to Alternatives.” In addition to his political work, he writes columns for various newspapers.

Recently, Mujahidul Islam Selim spoke with Our Voice about contemporary issues in Bangladesh. The interview was conducted by Bangladesh Correspondent Riyaz Uddin.

Our Voice: The interim government has mentioned holding elections after reforms but hasn't specified the duration of its tenure. How do you view this situation?

Mujahidul Islam Selim: Look, this government came to power by overthrowing an extreme fascist regime. It is an interim government with a limited mandate. My expectation is that this government will improve the electoral and democratic systems as quickly as possible.

Our Voice: What are your expectations from the government?

Mujahidul Islam Selim: The working people have long-standing demands that have been neglected. I expect this government to address these issues for the working class.

Our Voice: What message do you have for the student and public movement leaders who played a crucial role in removing the autocratic regime?

Mujahidul Islam Selim: The role of students and the public is not over; it has, in fact, increased. The demands that led to the removal of the fascist government must be fulfilled by the interim government. The students and public need to maintain pressure, almost taking on the role of the opposition.

Our Voice: Can you comment on the nine-point demands of the students?

Mujahidul Islam Selim: Of the nine demands made by the students, only one has been fulfilled—Sheikh Hasina's resignation. The other eight demands remain unmet. I hope the government will work to fulfill these remaining demands.

Our Voice: Thank you very much.

Mujahidul Islam Selim: Thank you to Our Voice as well.
