Is This the Most Expensive Food in the World?

For some, a luxurious life means expensive cars, grand mansions, or fashionable attire. But for others, luxury revolves around food – their lives are centred on the culinary experience. You might wonder how much one can possibly spend on food. Well, there are dishes so expensive that a single bite could cost you hundreds of thousands of taka.
One of the world’s most exquisite delicacies is caviar. Caviar is essentially the roe of a particular type of fish, resembling small jelly-like beads. It usually comes in shades of black, olive, grey, and orange.
Caviar from the beluga sturgeon is considered the most exquisite food on Earth. Not only is beluga caviar delicious, but it’s also rare. Unlike other fish, the beluga sturgeon does not lay eggs seasonally. It takes almost 20 years for a beluga sturgeon to mature, after which it is killed to collect the roe from its belly. Due to overfishing, this fish is now critically endangered. However, modern techniques now allow for caviar to be harvested without killing the fish.
Another popular caviar comes from the albino sturgeon. According to the Guinness World Records, one kilogram of caviar from an albino sturgeon caught in Iran’s Caspian Sea fetched a price of $34,500, which is over 4.1 million Bangladeshi taka.
Interestingly, this high-priced caviar was once a staple food for low-income individuals. Russian fishermen used to eat caviar with their everyday meals.
Caviar must always be stored at a low temperature to maintain its taste and nutritional value. Otherwise, it can lose its quality.
