UK Schoolgirls to Compete in Global Robotics Contest

An all-girl team is set to represent the UK at a prestigious international robotics competition in Athens. Teams from over 190 countries will participate in the First Global contest, which begins on Thursday. Each team has been assigned the challenge of creating a robot designed to tackle real-world issues, including food security.

The group of 13 to 16-year-olds from Bournemouth School for Girls is making history as the first all-girl team from the UK to take part in this event. Named "Ultraviolet," the team earned their spot after clinching the National Inspire Award at the First Tech Challenge UK Championship in Cambridge last June.

The contest is organised by First UK, a charity aimed at making STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) more accessible, diverse, and inclusive for young people.

Team member Ella, who works as a software engineer on the project, has been instrumental in programming the robot's controls. She expressed her excitement, saying, "Opportunities like this really help to encourage people to get into STEM and gain practical experience, which can significantly boost confidence."

Patrice John-Baptiste, head of engagement at First UK, shared her admiration for Ultraviolet, stating, "They continually show that no challenge is insurmountable, and I am impressed by their ability to appreciate each other's unique contributions while investing in their community. The girls exemplify strong leadership and innovation in STEM, an area where women are often underrepresented."

David Sims, the head teacher of the girls' school, added, "We are incredibly proud of their achievements, especially as they are the first all-girl team to represent the UK in this international competition."
