Dr. Zubaida Rahman’s Sentence Suspended

The government has suspended the court's sentence against Dr. Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP's acting chairman Tarique Rahman, in a 2007 case filed at Kafrul Police Station.

The suspension order was issued on Sunday through a notification signed by Mohammad Abu Sayeed Molla, Deputy Secretary of the Security Services Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The notification stated that in light of the appeal submitted regarding the suspension of Dr. Zubaida Rahman's sentence and the opinion of the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, the sentence is suspended for one year under the power granted by Section 401(1) of The Code of Criminal Procedure (Act No. V of 1898). This suspension is conditional on her surrender to the court and filing an appeal.

Earlier, on August 2 last year, the court sentenced Tarique Rahman to nine years and Dr. Zubaida Rahman to three years in prison for acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income.

Additionally, the court ordered the confiscation of Tarique’s illicit assets worth BDT 2 crore 74 lakh 93 thousand 87 in favour of the state. Tarique was also fined BDT 3 crore, while Zubaida was fined BDT 35 lakh.
