Biden Approves $567 Million Defense Aid for Taiwan

US President Joe Biden's administration has approved a defense support package worth $567 million (€507 million) for Taiwan, the White House announced. The approval grants the Secretary of State authority to "direct the drawdown of up to $567 million in defense articles, services, and military education and training from the Department of Defense" to assist Taiwan, according to a White House statement. Further details were not disclosed.

This new package follows last year’s approval of $345 million in defense aid for Taiwan.

Taiwan, a self-governed island, is claimed by China as part of its territory. While the US does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taipei, it remains one of Taiwan’s key allies and arms suppliers. Beijing, however, has repeatedly demanded that Washington cease arms sales to Taiwan, viewing it as interference in China's internal affairs.

The Taiwan issue has long been a point of tension between the US and China, with Beijing condemning international support for the island. China has also ramped up military and political pressure, frequently deploying jets, drones, and warships near Taiwan.

Earlier this year, Biden's administration passed a law that allocated billions in funds to support Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.

Taipei has previously voiced concerns over delays in receiving US arms, including upgraded F-16 fighter jets.
